The theme of Glimpse at Kameyama Triennale expands into a large-scale installation in a historic building, offering an immersive experience of physically engaging with social media. The work features nine equal sections arranged in a grid to resemble Instagram posts on a profile page.
By presenting a social media-themed artwork in a historic and traditional Japanese room, I create a striking contrast between eras. Today, we process a year’s worth of Edo-period information in a single day. This work allows the past to be present, while reflecting on what we’ve gained and sacrificed through our coexistence with social media in the digital age.
In this installation, I visualize the flow of information behind our screens, highlighting our tendency to unconsciously absorb excessive information in an instant. This meticulously crafted sculpture serves as a counterpoint to the fleeting, addictive, and often unsettling nature of the digital world, while encouraging deeper rumination.
